What I plan to do in the exhibition spaceTalking into my phone while I'm walking What I plan to do in the exhibition space is to assemble all of the work I have available that I've pulled together in my life, work that is available and show-able and significant. I have far too many images and videos to show of course but there's a limited number of physical objects I can present and it will be a focus on those physical objects and pieces, although some of them rely on video support such as the cone wall which moves very very slowly and viewers will appreciate what's going on by being able to view a time lapse of the wall. There are other pivotal works that I have that are video-based, which I'll also try to show. A really critical object that I want to show is a piece of typewriter writing that I did at the end of my third year as an OCA student, I guess in 1976, which has never been shown. There's also very new work that I want to show that's also never been shown in the form of ceramic and clay objects made in the past few years, which I'm very excited about as they seem to have triggered a resurgence in practice after something of a lull - resulting from my final years of teaching at OCAD, COVID and retirement. Not to mention increased attention being paid to my family with the birth of grandchildren. Another point is how this show has not been planned or anticipated, as it comes out of an unanticipated invitation to join the Lucid Art Co-op, which I agreed to do as I feel opportunities like this knock only once. It's all been happening very fast. And another important factor to consider is the distance I have to travel from the gallery. It's about an hour and a half drive, each way, and I'll have to transport a lot of work back and forth. This has caused me to develop a strategy wherein, over the three weeks I have the space, I will dedicate the first week to bringing work to the gallery and setting things up, then have an opening and artist talk, and leave the work up for about a week, and then for the final week start bringing work home. But for the entire time I will be available for people to come and engage in the work and perhaps some discussion. I'm also thinking I will be making work while I'm there or assembling work. or repairing work that has been needed repair over many years of storage. So the plan is to create an opportunity for a kind of residency, studio practice, and exhibition. I'm quite prepared to go into this not knowing what's going to happen, or what I'll show, or how I'll show it. And I'm also quite prepared to make decisions on the fly, which for me is an essential component of my art practice, which relates in no small way to my Zen meditation practice and my art practice, that puts emphasis on not planning on being spontaneous. |
